A circular route around the Brecon Beacons including the famous Black Mountain Pass with a stop for lunch at the fabulous Hills restaurant for a great burger with a view.

Drive Overview

A mixture of A and B roads including a mountain climb, some twisty sections and lots of open flowing roads with great views.

Extended Drive Highlights & Info

There are so many fabulous roads and routes around the Brecon Beacons you cannot really go wrong with a roadtrip in the area. This little circular has some great roads, great views and a great burger on route too.

You can start anywhere on route but I have chosen Hills Restaurant as it makes a great place to start or finish your day. Fantastic burgers with a spectacular view but be sure to reserve your table online in advance, they get busy. They are also dog friendly if you want to bring a four legged friend on route for the day.

The route can be driven clockwise or anti-clockwise, the latter being my personal preference as the climb and views are better driving north to south along the famous A4069 Black Mountain Road.

Just short of 90 miles the route can be driven in under 2.5 hours. You will probably want to allow for a little bit more time for a few stops on the way though to soak in the views and take a few photos. If driving anti-clockwise from Hills, a few potential stops on route and things to do if making a day of it include:

LLandovery - Castle, cafe’s including the Owls Nest and public loos in the castle car park

Black Mountain Road Viewpoint - The name says it all

Penderyn Distillery - The home of Welsh Whisky, pick up a few souvenirs or take a tour if you have time

Pen y Fan - The highest peak in South Wales and a great hike for those feeling energetic. If staying for a while you can use the new Pont ar Daf car park or if just stopping to take in the view, the nearby Glyn Tarell Layby does the trick

Note: The A4069 Black Mountain Road does now have a 40mph limit in place with average speed cameras installed and you will encounter some 20mph zones getting to and from the A4069 but the road is still a spectacle to drive.

Enjoy =)
