The A4086 climbs from Nant Peris between Yr Wyddfa and the Glyderau, the narrowest of the great passes of Eryri, its floor strewn with boulders that have come down off the crags. At the top is Pen-y-Pass, where paths start up Yr Wyddfa, and from there the road drops to Pen-y-Gwryd.
The car park at Pen-y-Pass has to be booked ahead, and the lay-bys fill early with climbers, so in summer it's a road to drive rather than stop on; there's a park and ride from Nant Peris. In the evening, with the light down the valley, it's at its finest.
