The A4069 crosses the western end of Bannau Brycheiniog, over the open moor of the Black Mountain, Y Mynydd Du. From Llangadog it climbs in long, open sweeps, with the horseshoe bend partway up that made the road's name, then runs across the top past old quarries before dropping into Brynamman.
It's wide and well kept, with car parks at the top for the views back over the Tywi valley. On a fine weekend it's busy with cars and bikes alike, so it's at its best early in the day, mid-week or out of season.
