The R584 climbs from Kealkill into the Shehy Mountains and through the Pass of Keimaneigh, a narrow cut in the rock with crags close on both sides, then runs down past the turning for Gougane Barra to Ballingeary.
Gougane Barra, where the River Lee begins, is a short way off the road: a lake in a ring of mountains, with St Finbarr's little chapel on its island. The pass is narrow, so take it steadily, and in the Gaeltacht beyond it the road signs are in Irish.
