The army built the Military Road after the 1798 rebellion, so that soldiers could reach the rebels hiding out in the Wicklow Mountains. It runs south over open bog from the head of the Glencree valley, through the crossroads at the Sally Gap and along the top of Glenmacnass, then drops past the waterfall to Laragh.
It's narrow and high, with sheep grazing beside it and nothing to keep them off it, and snow closes it in winter. There's a car park at the top of Glenmacnass Waterfall, and Glendalough is a mile beyond Laragh.
